Teaching Awards
The University of Melbourne offers a number of rewards for excellence in the practice and support of learning and teaching. Nominations can include individuals or teams and are supported by senior staff. Winners are selected by the University Awards Selection Committee and each recipient receives a substantial grant.
The University Awards Selection Committee also determines the University's nominees for the Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT) administered by the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC).

University Awards for Excellence
University Awards for Teaching
There are three discipline-based awards offered by the University of Melbourne to recognise excellence in teaching. These are: the Barbara Falk Award (Arts, Education, Law, Music); the Edward Brown Award (Architecture, Engineering, Economics and Commerce, Business); and the David White Award (Science, Health, Agriculture, Veterinary Science).
In 2009, the recipients of the University's Teaching Awards are:
- Mr Clinton Golding, Centre for the Study of Higher Education (CSHE), for the Barbara Falk Award
- Dr Angela Paladino, Faculty of Economics and Commerce, for the Edward Brown Award
- Dr Laura Parry, Faculty of Science, for the David White Award
University Award for Supervision
The University offers a single award for excellence in Research Higher Degree supervision. The Research Higher Degree Supervision Award is named annually in honour of an outstanding supervisor in the recipient's discipline.
In 2009, the prize has been named the Barbara Evans Award and the recipient is:
- Professor Rachel Webster, Faculty of Science

University Awards for Programs, Service and Mentoring
In addition to the awards for teaching and supervision, the University of Melbourne also offers awards for programs in support of learning and teaching, service to students, and mentoring. These are: the Norman Curry Award for Innovation and Excellence in Support of and Service to Teaching and Learning; the Gerry Barretto Award for members of staff who demonstrate excellence in the provision of service to students; and the Patricia Grimshaw Award for Mentor Excellence.
The 2009 recipients of these awards are:
- Dr Jennifer Conn and team, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences (MDHS), An Early Clinical Skills Program for Medical Students: a Developmental and Evidence-Based Approach, for the Norman Curry Award (Program Award).
- Ms Christine Enker, Academic Enrichment Services and Mr Jonathan Norton, Counseling, Wellbeing Services, for the Gerry Barretto Award (Service Award for Professional Staff).
- Associate Professor P. Margaret Brown, Melbourne Graduate School of Education, for the Patricia Grimshaw Award (Mentor Award).

Australian Awards for University Teaching
The Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT) are administered by the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC), appointed by the Federal Education Minister.
There are three types of awards offered by the ALTC. These are:
- Awards for Teaching Excellence: The recipients of these awards are recognised as Australia's foremost teachers in higher education.
- Awards for Programs that Enhance Learning: Program Award winners are acknowledged for exemplary learning and teaching support programs and services that improve student learning and enhance the student experience
- Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning: Citations are awarded to academic, professional and sessional staff, and institutional associates, who have made significant contributions to student learning in a specific area of responsibility over a sustained period
