Learning and Teaching Vision
Excellence in Learning and Teaching is fundamental to the academic management of the University of Melbourne and the Provost Division plays a leading role in guiding its development. The University has several key goals for Learning and Teaching as set out in Growing Esteem 2010. By 2015 we will be able to say that:
- The University of Melbourne is amongst the most highly ranked against key national learning and teaching, student satisfaction and graduate outcome indicators.
- The student profile at The University of Melbourne will comprise a cosmopolitan balance of cultures and have an educationally appropriate balance of international and domestic students in award courses. Access to The University of Melbourne is based on merit, regardless of financial or social background.
- The University of Melbourne has about 35,000 equivalent full time students with a more even split between undergraduate and graduate students.
- The University of Melbourne has rolled-out the graduate component of the Melbourne Model, our graduate students have entered the workforce, and we are providing the best graduate experience in the country according to appropriate national indicators.
Our over-arching aspiration for Learning and Teaching at the University of Melbourne is to attract students of the highest academic potential, regardless of background, and enable them through an outstanding curriculum and university experience to develop as globally aware professionals, citizens and leaders in their communities.
Strategies
Against this background, the University Plan contains six strategies for improving the quality of our performance on internal and external measures, and for achieving proposed targets by 2015:
- To attract and support excellent students from all backgrounds.
- To offer a distinctive and excellent Melbourne Model curriculum.
- To deliver an outstanding student experience.
- To offer outstanding graduate education through world-class graduate schools.
- To support students in maximising their graduate outcomes.
- To encourage and reward excellence and creativity in learning and teaching practice.
Leadership and coordination
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) leads the development and implementation of Learning and Teaching strategies across the University, including the provision of advice and support on curriculum review and design, coordinating responses to government policy initiatives, and the award of Learning and Teaching grants to staff. She is responsible for the University’s e-Learning Strategy and takes a leadership role in evaluation, benchmarking and quality assurance activities.
The DVC (Academic) works closely with the Provost’s Fellow in Student Experience, Professor Phil Batterham, on the embedding of graduate attributes, particularly community leadership and active global citizenship, in the Melbourne Student Experience. The Strategic Adviser on Learning Environments Design, Associate Professor Peter Jamieson, works with the DVC (Academic) and faculties and graduate schools on a range of initiatives to improve the quality of the student on-campus experience.
The DVC (Academic) also works with the Executive Director (Student Services) and Academic Registrar to guide and coordinate student service activities across the University, particularly in the areas of enterprise systems, student advising and academic policies and procedures.
