Student Services Vision

High quality student service delivery is a key part of the University’s strategy to achieve our Learning and Teaching goals.

Our over-arching aspiration for Learning and Teaching at the University of Melbourne is to attract students of the highest academic potential, regardless of background, and enable them through an outstanding curriculum and university experience to develop as globally aware professionals, citizens and leaders in their communities.

The University’s strategic vision in student services is based on aspiring to provide a quality all-round experience for students that will strengthen their connection to the University, complement their academic studies, and enhance their development as individuals.

Our vision is to deliver student services that are innovative, efficient, accessible, and responsive to the diversity of student needs, are delivered in partnership with other parts of the University, and are integrated with our goals for Learning and Teaching. Ultimately, services should foster student progress and success, and be delivered through an integrated, coordinated and seamless network of support.

Leadership and coordination

The Executive Director (Student Services) and Academic Registrar leads and coordinates student service delivery across the University, including through Student Centres and specialist service providers. The Executive Director leads the implementation of service improvement strategies and initiatives, including shared systems and staff training and development programs.

Service standards and protocols, and a Student Services Commitment (PDF 300.6 KB), guide the integrated program of student service activities in place across our campuses.

Student service provision across the University is subject to a range of quality assurance processes and regular service evaluation exercises, for example, through the Melbourne Experience Survey, customer service benchmarking exercises and student feedback and focus groups.

Several large-scale reviews of student service delivery have been undertaken in 2010 and 2011, and these have led to some fine-tuning of our service delivery model and a range of new initiatives, notably in the areas of enterprise systems, student advising and graduations.

A major project to streamline service delivery through Student Centres, the Melbourne Student Services Model Project, will run from 2011 to 2013. There is also considerable work being undertaken to simplify academic and student-related policies and procedures, ensuring readily accessible information and consistent outcomes for students.
